How do people feel about living on the Peninsula?

What’s life like on the Medway Peninsula?
We spoke to residents in Allhallows, Cliffe, Cliffe Woods, High Halstow, Isle of Grain and Stoke to find out. People told us they love the peace, nature and community spirit—but also shared concerns about poor transport, limited amenities and access to health services. This report shines a light on what’s working, what’s missing, and what could help improve wellbeing across these rural villages. This report is part of a year-long project, looking at all areas of Medway. Reports on different areas will be posted across the year.

🌿 Life on the Peninsula: What Residents Love

We spoke to 34 people living across Allhallows, Cliffe, Cliffe Woods, High Halstow, Isle of Grain and Stoke to understand what life is really like in these rural Medway villages.

Many residents told us they love the peace and quiet, the strong sense of community, and the beautiful green spaces. Over half mentioned the local nature reserves and RSPB-protected marshes as a source of joy and relaxation.

“The marshes in Cliffe are beautiful. If you haven't been there you haven't lived.”

“I love this little play park – everyone gets together here after school. It’s great for the kids and lovely for mums too.”

🚧 What’s Getting in the Way?

While many enjoy the rural lifestyle, some challenges are making life harder for residents.

  • Lack of amenities and poor public transport were the most common concerns.
  • Road conditions, building works, and limited entertainment options – especially for young people – were also frequently mentioned.
  • Several residents said they felt isolated or inconvenienced, especially those without access to a car.

“You need a car – you wouldn’t get out otherwise.”

“There’s nothing for the kids to do, there’s one park but not much else.”

Getting around isn’t easy
One of the biggest challenges for residents across the Peninsula is transport. With buses running infrequently—or not at all—many people feel stuck without a car. This affects everything from getting to work and school, to accessing doctors and shops. For some, it’s more than inconvenient—it’s isolating.

💬 What Would Make a Difference?

Residents shared ideas for improving health and wellbeing in their communities:

  • More community spaces and clubs, especially for children and older adults
  • Better access to doctors and mental health support
  • Improved transport links, exercise opportunities, and local amenities
  • Greater affordability and protection of green spaces

Most people said they find out what’s happening locally through Facebook groups, word of mouth, and village newsletters.

“Best thing was putting in this hub where people can chat. If we could have it open every day – you could be driven mad otherwise.”
