What People Like About Gillingham

Many residents appreciate the convenience and amenities on their doorstep, as well as the sense of community. Here’s what they told us:

  • “Everything is at hand – shops, leisure centres and parks.”
  • “The amenities are very close to me, like the hospital and the train station.”
  • “There are lots of people who want Gillingham to be better, but they don’t realise there is already such a strong sense of community.”

What People Don’t Like

Concerns about crime, litter, and a declining high street were common themes. Residents said:

  • “It’s quite skanky and quite dangerous around here. A lot of crime happens.”
  • “Filthiest place – roads and pavements full of litter, it’s filthy.”
  • “The high street has gone downhill. There used to be lots here but not anymore.”

The Bigger Picture

Gillingham is a busy urban town with strong transport links and proximity to London, but it faces challenges typical of densely populated areas. Anti-social behaviour, environmental upkeep, and access to health services are key concerns that affect how safe and supported people feel.

What Could Be Better

Residents had clear ideas for improvement, from better health services to safer streets and more community spaces:

  • “To get more GPs and a bigger hospital.”
  • “Start off with the basics and work on the image, try to give Gillingham some pep again.”
  • “It would be nice to have ‘women only’ exercise sessions and more communal things.”
