Life in Rochester: What Residents Really Think

Healthwatch Medway spoke to 27 Rochester residents in May 2025 to understand how living in the area impacts their health and wellbeing. This is part of a wider series exploring Medway communities.

The report reveals a mixed picture of life in Rochester. Many residents appreciate the town’s history, community feel, and local amenities, which positively influence mental health and social life. However, concerns about litter, lack of amenities, anti-social behaviour, and poor access to health services highlight challenges that affect wellbeing and quality of life.

What’s Good About Rochester

Residents highlighted local amenities, convenience, and a strong sense of community. Many said these factors boost mental health and social life.

  • “I love the High Street there is such an eclectic mix of shops.”
  • “It has a real village community feel about it.”
  • “It enables me and my family to get out and go to one of the country parks. It is good for our mental health.”
  • “There's lots to do and to enjoy here there's festivals, a good music scene and lots of history.”

People value Rochester’s history, friendly atmosphere, green spaces, and easy access to shops and entertainment.

Many residents feel Rochester offers a good quality of life thanks to its history, green spaces, and strong sense of community. These features make the area appealing and contribute positively to mental health and social wellbeing.

What's not so good about Rochester

Residents raised concerns about cleanliness, amenities, and safety:

  • “There's always mess everywhere. There's rubbish around the bins.”
  • “Parking can be difficult – you need a residential permit.”
  • “The youth is a problem… They think they own the paths and will barge you off on their bikes.”
  • “The medical/health service is dire. GP appointments are difficult to get.”

The main issues include litter, lack of amenities, parking difficulties, anti-social behaviour, and poor access to health services.

Despite the positives, residents highlighted several challenges that affect their day-to-day lives. Issues like litter, poor infrastructure, and limited health services create frustration and can negatively impact wellbeing.

What would residents like to see improved?

People want better health services, cleaner streets, and more community facilities:

  • “Having more GPs, so that you can get a GP appointment when you need one.”
  • “Better upkeep of the area. If it was all clean, then people would be happier.”
  • “Address the housing shortage, particularly for the homeless.”
  • “Having more events for families especially if they were free during school holidays.”

Rochester offers history, green spaces, and a strong sense of community, but issues like litter, poor health access, and anti-social behaviour need attention. Residents want cleaner streets, improved healthcare, and more local activities.
