Public Perceptions of Crime, Anti-Social Behaviour and Personal Safety in Medway

Between January and November 2024, Healthwatch Medway spoke to 455 residents across the region to understand how wider social issues affect health and wellbeing. This latest report focuses on the 170 individuals who, unprompted, raised concerns about crime, anti-social behaviour (ASB), and personal safety—making it the most frequently mentioned issue in our year-long engagement.

The findings reveal a stark picture: 29% of respondents reported feeling unsafe, particularly in the evenings, with many avoiding certain areas altogether. Women, older adults, and residents from ethnic minority backgrounds were disproportionately affected.

"I don’t go out at night, it just doesn’t feel safe. I wouldn’t let my kids go out after dark. I hate it."

This report triangulates community feedback with data from the Community Safety Partnership and Medway Youth Council, highlighting shared concerns around policing, drug use, homelessness, and environmental neglect. We invite health and social care professionals, local authorities, and community organisations to read the report and consider how these insights can inform future planning and service delivery.
